West Virginia First Lady Sandy Wise visits Sunbeam Child Care Center

To spread the word of the "Love to Learn" project, West Virginia First Lady Sandy Wise visited Sunbeam Child Care Cernter on October 24, 2001. "Love to Learn" will help prepare children for school," she said to an audience of educators, businessmen, and area professionals from Marion County.

The program encourages parents and caregivers to read, sing, and talk to children from birth on. Its goal is to help support parents and caregivers through sharing information and ideas. "Love to Learn" is a program of the Governor's Cabinet on children and families, of which Wise is an honorary chair.

After the presentation, First Lady Sandy Wise visited the "Sunbeam" classrooms. She talked with the children and teachers in each classroom. In the baby room, "Little Sunbeams" First Lady Sandy Wise played with the babies. She read "Annie's Perfect Pet" to the pre-school class and presented them with their own book.

Hovah Underwood visits Sunbeam Child Care Center

On February 25, 2000 First Lady Hovah Underwood gave Sunbeam Child Care Center along with 9 other child care centers in West Virginia an award for Exemplary early care and education programs. At the award ceremony Mrs. Underwood stated that she would like to visit all the 10 exemplary programs in West Virginia. On Friday, October 27th she did just that! The school age children lined both sides of the driveway with blue and gold streamers and a sign that said, "Welcome Mrs. Underwood". "What a wonderful greeting", Mrs. Underwood said, "I am very happy to be here". Helen Post-Brown owner/director of Sunbeam Child Care Center gave Mrs. Underwood and her dear friend, Pat Kelly, a tour of the center. Mrs. Underwood visited each of the 5 classrooms. The children ranged in age from 3 months to 12 years old. First Lady Hovah Underwood joined the pre-school class led by Wendy Wells, Beth Speelman and Kim Dunn for a snack of pumpkin cookies and apple cider. After the snack the childen gathered around Mrs. Underwood to listen to a story, "Quick as a Cricket". At the end of the story Mrs. Underwood signed the book and donated it to the center. Sunbeam children and teachers were thrilled to meet Mrs. Underwood. They enjoyed her visit. This week they are working on a thank you card to show their appreciation for her visit.
